LIFE GREEN ADAPT Project

AIMEN presented LIFE GREEN ADAPT at the XIX ATEGRUS Conference on Controlled Landfills in Lleida on 21 October 2025. The presentation, titled “LIFE GREEN ADAPT: Bio-technosoils and NbS for cost-effective leachate treatment”, highlighted nature-based, climate-resilient solutions for sustainable leachate management. The session fostered discussions on circular economy, innovative post-closure strategies and odour management alongside industry experts.

LIMNOS presented LIFE GREEN ADAPT and its blue-green infrastructure at the annual Conference of the Chamber of Public Utilities of Slovenia. Delivered in the Wastewater drainage and treatment session, the talk “The potential of various treatment wetlands for wastewater and leachate” highlighted climate drivers, the value of NbS, and investor awareness. At WETPOL 2025 in Gdańsk, Poland, AIMEN sponsored a special session to showcase LIFE GREEN ADAPT results. Partners AIMEN, AU, UPC and LIMNOS presented findings on metakaolin for leachate treatment, electroactive wetlands, microbial biofilm characterization and floating wetland applications.

This Master’s thesis, supervised by AIMEN, evaluated an innovative electroactive vertical-flow constructed wetland for wastewater treatment. Using a high-conductivity carbon substrate, the study showed significant pollutant reduction with real wastewater and highlighted the system’s dependence on influent quality and active biofilms, indicating strong potential with further optimization.

On 22 July 2025, ISLE hosted the 2nd project Innovation Workshop alongside members of the Innovation Board, focusing on the mid-review of results of liquid stream treatment technologies, as well as bio-technosoils and the vulnerability risk assessment tool developed by GLOBAL FACTOR. ISLE created a webinar based on the contents of the workshop and published a press release on the Innovation Workshop, both of which can be found in Resources.

In 2023 and 2025, Carlos Arias of Aarhus Universitet (AU) delivered PhD course at Aarhus University aimed at driving forward principles and technical understanding of the value and science behind treatment wetlands for the management of polluted wastewater, particularly in the context of landfill leachate as it relates to LIFE GREEN ADAPT.

The VII Pan-American Conference on Nature-Based Water Treatment using Constructed Wetlands was held in Asuncion, Paraguay, from 16-20 June 2025. The event, organised by FACEN-UNA and HUPANAM, gathered experts from 12 countries to exchange knowledge on sustainable water treatment technologies.

On 17 June 2025, LIFE GREEN ADAPT participated in the “Circular Economy Innovation for Sustainable Waste Effluents” webinar during EU Green Week. Álvaro Silva Teira presented the project’s nature-based solutions for landfill management, highlighting strategies to mitigate climate change impacts on landfills.

The S341 Final Conference, “Exploring Earth, Empowering Europe,” was held on 12 June 2025 at the Museo do Mar de Galicia in Vigo, Spain. The event brought together policymakers, industry and academia, featuring presentations from aligned EU projects including LIFE GREEN ADAPT. Discussions addressed innovation, social responsibility and long-term sustainability in mining.
